"Being able to chew, swallow, taste, speak and smile is important for people’s health and wellbeing, throughout their entire life. My research is based on the salutogenic theory, which is about understanding the origins of health, specifically why some people have good oral health. The mouth is a reflection of our lifestyle but also how we perceive and manage our everyday life, based on available resources. My research focuses particularly on behavioural, psychosocial and environmental factors that can have an impact on the health choices we make, which in turn have an impact on our oral health. The research also highlights the importance of collaboration between dental care and other arenas, such as school, elderly care and social care services. It concerns the entire life cycle from children and adolescents to young and older adults. Another part of my research is about workplace health in dental care."
Ulrika Lindmark often collaborates with researchers from different disciplines such as public health sciences, nursing, biology, psychology, medicine, occupational therapy and social work. This contributes to the research capturing different types of expertise and thereby different perspectives.
- With my thesis, I introduced the salutogenic theory to Swedish dental care, which is applied in most studies today but also in dental hygienist programmes, which I am very pleased about. My collaboration with colleagues in other countries such as South Africa, Vietnam and the US has meant that the research has gained international recognition as well.Â
In her spare time, Ulrika Lindmark likes to relax by practising yoga, listening to a good book, going for walks in nature or going to gym classes. Her family and friends are also an important source of energy for her.
