We would propose a back-to-back panel, from the Global Gender Matters (GGM) Network, based at the Department of Gender Studies, Lund University. We are an interdisciplinary group of scholars, who work on multiple scopes and scales of empirical and theoretical frameworks on local and global issues through a gendered and feminist lens. We would like to bring this interdisciplinary and transnational approach to the G22 conference, in order to address the main themes: changing uncertainties and hopeful futures within gender studies, from local and global perspectives. The first part of the back-to-back panel would be paper presentations and the second part would be a round table discussion. The round table dialogue will build on the points emerging from the paper presentations.

Abstract for part 2: Round Table Discussion: Hopeful futures in times of crises and uncertainties - (2 hours)

Panelists at the round table discussion will depart from the following questions: how is ‘hope’ made sense of in the research of our two Global Gender Matters panels, as related to experiences of crises and uncertainties in a postcolonial perspective? What are the spaces of hope in our research, which we can locate in empirical realities or theories? How can we analyse the multiple layers and tensions of individual and collective hope, hopefulness and hopelessness, as shaped in times of crises, instabilities and uncertainties? How do we employ different methodological tools, anchored in our respective disciplinary approaches and specifically in gender studies, to study these global concerns? These questions offer a starting point for the round table discussion to address critical Global Gender Matters.

Abstract for Part 1: Paper presentations: Tensions and hopeful futures in times of crises and uncertainties - (2 hours)

In this panel, we would present papers which explore contemporary shifts in global socio-politics and economies that construct uncertainties. Situated in gender studies, this panel will address the multi-scalar dimensions of global and local gendered lives. The following questions will guide and interlink all the papers: How to make meaning in tensile relationships which emerge in uncertain times between crises, hopes and potentialities? How can different epistemologies and methodologies within gender studies be harnessed to examine and analyse these tensions? The aim of this panel is to inquire into the ways in which the tensions and oscillations between uncertainty and hope unfold in practice. Taking several feminist(s) perspectives as their point of departure, the panelists approach a range of issues, which include sexuality, gender and queerness, global economic flows in colonial and postcolonial contexts and intersectional hierarchies. Whilst diverse in both content and form, the research presented in the panel recognises gender studies as a particularly well-suited territory for exploring the frictions and tractions that shape societal understandings of uncertainty and hope.
