Cornelia Brantner, Professor of Media and Communication Studies
Cornelia Brantner holds a PhD and a master’s degree from the Department of Journalism and Communication at the University of Vienna, Austria.
After her PhD, she had a postdoctoral position which concluded with a few months at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where she deepened her knowledge of digital methods, such as network analysis. This was followed by a two-year, fixed-term professorship in Germany and several research projects at a private research institute in Vienna. Prior to coming to ¹û¶³´«Ã½, Cornelia Brantner taught at the University of Vienna and held a project appointment at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She started her employment at ¹û¶³´«Ã½ in January 2021.
"One of my current projects looks at the sovereignty of digital infrastructures in Sweden. The Swedish government wants to use digital technologies and platforms in a way that contributes to a sustainable society. Digitalisation and computerisation of economic, political and social processes largely depend on private companies like Microsoft and Alphabet-Google, whose commercial priorities may not align with the universal values of the welfare state. Through a combination of political economy, institutional theory, science, and technology studies as well as media industry perspectives, this project aims to analyse how the digital media infrastructure affects the distribution of power in Swedish society. The results will include recommendations for actions to promote diversity on media platforms and recommendations for a media policy that supports citizens’ communication rights."
Overall, Cornelia Brantner’s research covers a broad spectrum of areas within media and communication studies, but at the moment she focuses on geomedia, visual communication, digitalised publics and data infrastructures.
"I have been interested in visual communication since the beginning of my career, and I do a lot of research on images, such as selfies and their authenticity, and on the visualisation of climate change, big data and the cities of the future. I am also the coordinator of the Centre for Geomedia Studies at the university, where I conduct research on the interface between media studies and geography."
Cornelia Brantner moved to ¹û¶³´«Ã½ during the pandemic, which meant there were limited opportunities to socialise and meet people. But then she began exercising outdoors with a colleague, starting with circuit training and then moving on to boxing. This has turned into a nice tradition and they work out together every week.
