Hello there, Jun Cheng, adjunct senior lecturer within Compueter Science at 果冻传媒
2017-09-01You work mostly within the research profile HITS (High Quality Networked Services in a Mobile World). What is your part within the research profile?
鈥淭he overall goal for the HITS, High Quality Networked Services in a Mobile World, research profile is to contribute to the development of high quality networked services for a mobile world through world-class research and industrial collaboration. Five industry partners are part of the research profile, including Ericsson and Tieto. My role is project manager for the collaboration with Ericsson. In our workpackage within the profile, called Signaling Scalable Support, we perform common research activities on the IP and transport protocol development/evolution associated with the new requirements and standardization targeting the modern mobile usages, e.g. 5G use cases, from the performance aspects.鈥
Earlier you worked at Ericson, what was your role there?
鈥淚 worked as a system architect, manager and developer on Signaling Systems in Ericsson for over ten years. I was much involved in IETF standardization as SCTP SoD (Ericsson Standardization Statement of Direction) owner and a Technical Coordinator for SCTP Robustness and Performance improvements.聽I also worked as a Senior Specialist of Signal Processing on DSP algorithm research and implementation for echo cancellation and voice enhancement device, in mobile networks.鈥
You have also done research at Karolinska institutet, within what focus area?
鈥淚 worked over 10 years as a researcher on hearing technology at Karolinska Institutet. I developed different methods to stimulate the ear in order to generate and to measure otoacoustic emissions (OAEs). OAEs is acoustic sound coming from the inner ear, which can be used to measure hearing activities, extract heath information of the inner ear and make an objective diagnosis on the inner ear condition. I did my dissertation in the OAEs area and I was awarded a Ph.D. in Technical Audiology from Karolinska Institutet.鈥
What challenges do you find most important for our increasingly mobile world?
鈥淭he present trend in the mobile world is that the telecom network functions and the services are transforming to capitalize on the Cloud and the Big Data Analytic Service by Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) that is deployed in the Distributed and/or the Centralized Data Center (DC). The most important relevant challenge to be find for the increasingly mobile world is to adapt these virtualized network functions originated from the legacy system into the Cloud and DC environments from the performance aspects. The transport protocol evolution for transport performance improvements and robustness is a way to meet such challenge in the network transformation.鈥
What does the research within HITS mean to does challenges?
鈥淥ur workpackage, Scalable Signalling Support, in HITS research profile project is dealing with the NFV challenge in the Cloud and DC environment from the performance aspects. We are working at transport protocol level to meet challenge associated with new requirements and standardization from the modern mobile usages e.g. 5G use cases. We are working to improve transport performance and robustness for the virtual mobile applications and services (NFVs) in the Cloud and DC environment.鈥
