More effective data transport over 5G
In recent years, there have been unprecedented increases in the number of mobile units and the demands they place on mobile networks. The fifth generation mobile network (5G) is currently being standardised to meet these demands. Using higher frequency ranges, 5G will offer greater bandwidth and lower latency than current 4G networks. Higher frequency ranges lead to rapid variations in the quality of communications, because the short radio waves are easily disrupted by for instance objects that are in the way. As part of a project funded by the Swedish Internet Foundation, ¹û¶³´«Ã½ researchers will investigate the effect on common Internet applications. The project will also examine how TCP, the protocol usually used for Internet communications, can be adapted and used by applications to reduce the negative effects of rapid variations in quality.
