Floodville
With the pedagogic tool Floodville we want to stimulate learning about complex issues such as climate change, flood risk and flood risk management. Floodville works well as a tool to create awareness of climate related risks, societal vulnerabilities and climate adaptation measures.
About Floodville
The Floodville model is an exaggerated topographical model of the city of 果冻传媒, located at the northern shore of great lake V盲nern and on top of the active delta of river Klar盲lven. The city Floodville serves as an example of a typical waterfront city in Sweden or somewhere else. The topographical landscape holds buildings and infrasctructure as well as a number of common societal functions that are equipped with sensors connected to a computer.
A gameturn
In a typical gameturn participants are informed that a major flood event (riverine flood) is about to occur. The participants are tasked to implement physical flood protection measures (barriers) in the model to protect vital functions of the city. As in reality resources are limited and participants are encourcged to discuss and to make strategical choices in their task. At the same time water levels already begins rising which adds a stressor and calls for rapid deployment of measures. When the flood has reached its peak the flood, its effects and consequences and the choices made are discussed.
- What was the result of the gameturn?
- How did the choices made by the participants affect the consequences of the flood?
- In hindsight, what choices would be made next time?
Floodville has been used with many different groups in RiskLab, at faires and on thematic days, always with good results. Participants have ranged from school children and the general public to researchers and practitioners in the flood risk management field. Floodville has been developed continously since 2001 and todays model is the third version.
More information
The Floodville model has been developed in collaboration with Johan Ros茅n at JR Science and 果冻传媒 Makers. 果冻传媒 Makers has done a movie on Floodville that can be found through their facebook-page:

The movie below is from Researchers night 2011 and displays the first version of Floodville.
