Nursing in relation to acute situations
7.5 ECTS creditsThe course deals with emergency and disaster preparedness in society and in healthcare in a national and international perspective. The psychosocial care and crisis intervention in connection with a major incident are treated. During the clinical placement period in emergency care, students focus on the care needs of patients and reflect on ethical dilemmas. Students deepen their knowledge and skills regarding structured assessment, prioritising and acute nursing, and develop their abilities through different simulation situations, and also gain experience of working in a team in emergency situations. The course has a focus on emergency situations in prehospital situations and in a clinic.
The course comprises the following components:
- emergency and disaster preparedness in society and in healthcare, nationally and internationally
- regulations pertaining to disasters and major incidents
- the responsibility of the nurse and cooperation in disasters and major incidents
- psychosocial care of the injured, next of kin, and co-workers in connection with acute situations and major accidents/disasters
- acute nursing of patients in emergency medical conditions relating to the central nervous system and respiratory and circulatory failure
- specific pharmacology related to acute medical conditions
- structured assessment of vital parameters
- medical technological equipment and safety regulations
- collaboration in teams
- ethical problems in emergency situations
- skills training/simulation in the care of acutely ill patients involving structured assessment and cooperation in a team (priority assessment on site, creating free airways, different forms of breathing support, shock treatment, SBAR)
- pharmaceutical calculation in diluting pharmaceutical drugs used in emergency situations.
Instruction is in the form of lectures, seminars, skills training/simulation, case methodology, and supervision. Clinical placement corresponding to 1.5 ECTS cr (32 hours) is a mandatory component carried out in emergency units.

Admission requirements
Fundamentals of Nursing and the Nursing Profession (30 ECTS credits) completed, and registered on Basic Clinical Nursing (30 ECTS credits) with at least 26 ECTS credits completed, including Drug Dosage Calculation 1, or equivalent

Selection is usually based on your grade point average from upper secondary school or the number of credit points from previous university studies, or both.
