The book "Stoppa matsvinnet! – en förpackad lösning" (unofficial translation: Stop Wasting Food — a Package Solution), written by Fredrik Wikström and Helén Williams, was named the winner in the Food, Climate and Environment category in the contest “Årets Svenska Måltidslitteratur 2022”.
Fredrik Wikström and Helén Williams are active at Service Research Center (CTF), as well as at the discipline of Energy and Environmental Technology at ý. In their book, they explain the underlying causes of food waste and provide practical tips and guidance for how producers and consumers can reduce waste.
– It feels fantastic and almost a bit unreal, says Fredrik Wikström, professor of Energy and Environmental Technology. We are passionate about sharing our knowledge about how you can reduce food waste. Hopefully, more people will discover the book.
The book was published by Fri Tanke in October, and the target audience is anyone who work with packaging in some manner, or who has a general interest in environmental issues.
– Few solutions are smarter for both the planet and our wallets than reducing food waste, says Helén Williams, associate professor of Energy and Environmental Technology. Packaging plays a big role in reducing food waste. After reading our book, many people will probably have a different view of packaging and its role in our lives and for our collective well-being.
The jury’s statement
“A unique handbook that deals with everyday issues related to the environmental impact of food waste. Consumers can avoid wasting food by adjusting their food purchases based on the amount of food they actually need and can eat before it spoils. We should start asking ourselves what we can bring to the dinner table.”
The contest is arranged every year by Måltidsakademin, for the purposes of promoting research and the development of a holistic perspective of food. All the winners were announced on 17 November, during a prize ceremony at the Royal Swedish Agricultural Academy in Stockholm.
