Expert Council puts reading in focus
2024-06-03The latest PISA study shows that young people鈥檚 reading skills are declining in Sweden, and their motivation to read is also decreasing. The newly formed Expert Council for Reading will work to promote interest in reading and literature, both in schools and in society at large. Michael Tengberg, Professor in Educational Work at 果冻传媒, is part of the council.
The Expert Council for Reading, initiated by the Teacher Foundation and Sweden鈥檚 Teachers Union, consists of selected teachers, preschool teachers, and researchers. The council鈥檚 goal is to strengthen reading instruction throughout the school system and create a school environment where reading longer texts is a natural part of everyday life.
鈥淎n advanced ability to read both subject texts and literature is fundamental, says Michael Tengberg. Not just for the individual but also for society. The school obviously has a special responsibility, but prioritizing time for reading and reflection is also a broader societal issue that the school cannot solve on its own. Experts I do not know if we are, but the initiative is important because it intends to highlight the teachers鈥 voice. Teachers have tons of experience, which unfortunately is rarely sought when reading is discussed at a national level. The council includes a group of incredibly knowledgeable and committed teachers. I feel very honored to be able to work with them to promote children鈥檚 and young people鈥檚 reading.鈥

The Expert Council recently published a debate article in Svenska Dagbladet that highlights the worrying decline in young people鈥檚 reading ability and motivation to read, as well as emphasizes the need for measures to promote reading within schools and society.
