International collaboration for sustainable urban environments
2024-05-14The book “Integrative Approaches in Urban Sustainability” represents an international collaboration project including about forty academic institutions worldwide. The book examines the increasing rate of urbanisation and the consequences for social structures.
- This publication aims to redefine the way we think and plan for urban environments of the future, says Asaad Almssad, Docent in Construction Engineering and one of the editors of the book. By analysing the seismic demographic changes that have characterised the global societal landscape since the early 19th century, the book looks at the accelerating rate of urbanisation and its widespread consequences for social structures. We are witnessing a steady transition from rural to urban environments, and the book provides an academic analysis of the challenges and opportunities this brings.
The book can be seen as an academic discourse and a practical guide for the design of future cities that are economically dynamic, technologically advanced, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. It presents integrated strategies that emphasise user-centered design, innovative technology and environmental awareness. The book includes discussions on the implementation of renewable technologies, such as solar energy systems in urban architecture, pedestrian-friendly and green spaces, as well as the crucial role of technological innovations in managing urban energy and health systems. Moreover, the book addresses socio-economic consequences of urbanisation and pressing issues such as access to affordable housing, quality education and health care, while emphasising the importance of urban centres in promoting economic growth and innovation and policy actions for economic and social justice.
The book has been edited by a group of researchers from different universities around the world. Chief editor is Amjad Almusaed, Jönköping University, along with co-editors Asaad Almssad, ý, Ibrahim Yitmen, JHT, Marita Wallhagen, University of Gävle, Ying-Fei Yang, National Taiwan University and Usha Iyer-Raniga from RMIT University, Australia.
