Research project on collaborative robots makes IVA’s 100 List
2024-11-22The research project on society-centred industry 5.0 – headed by Jorge Solis – has been selected for the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences’ (IVA) 100 List of 2024. The theme of this year’s list is innovation through interdisciplinary research.
– I feel very honoured that our research is on this year’s 100 List, says Jorge Solis, associate professor in electrical engineering at ¹û¶³´«Ã½. I’m also very pleased to represent ¹û¶³´«Ã½â€™s research in this context, which can provide opportunities for new projects and contacts.
Industry 5.0 for innovative and sustainable manufacturing
The project aims to implement new sustainable solutions based on collaborative robots that use mixed reality (MR) and artificial intelligence (AI), and to analyse the performance of the implemented solutions in the robot platforms that exist.
– The industry of today and the future requires modern technology where cooperation takes place between people, between people and machines, and between machines, says Jorge Solis. Machines can monitor themselves, analyse results and autonomously optimise operating conditions and production. The result is greater efficiency and productivity. By integrating mixed reality and artificial intelligence, we can achieve effective human-robot collaboration, enhancing the efficiency and minimising errors in collaborative robots.
The project has two focus areas: integration of a machine learning-based 3D gesture sensing system to make it easier for humans to send commands to a collaborative robot through body language, and integration of mixed reality for visualisation of both 3D cyber space and physical space to enable bidirectional human-robot interaction.
Project partners include Ritsumeikan University in Japan, the University of Southern Denmark and the Swedish company Goodtech Solutions AB.
The project Implementing Novel Sustainable Solutions Based on Collaborative Robots using Mixed Reality (MR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) was co-financed by VINNOVA (2022), and Multi-modal Human-Robot Co-adaptive Planning for Collaborative Tasks using Mixed Reality and Artificial Intelligence was co-financed by International Collaborative Research Program, Ritsumeikan University (2022–2023). The ongoing project Sustainable Human-Robot Synergy in Extended Reality by Foundation Model Integration for Super Smart Society 5.0 is co-financed by Ritsumeikan University International Collaborative Research Promotion Program (2024–2025). Project partners: Ritsumeikan University, ¹û¶³´«Ã½, University of Southern Denmark and UCLouvain.
About the 100 List
IVA’s annual 100 List, this time presented for the sixth time, highlights a variety of research projects from Swedish higher education institutions. The research projects are selected based on their potential to create value through commercialisation, business and method development, or societal impact. All participating researchers have an interest in creating more contacts with the business sector for application and further development of their projects.
