¹û¶³´«Ã½ has been granted funds from the Knowledge Foundation, for conducting research on energy-efficient tissue manufacturing, in collaboration with the paper industry. The aim of this research project is to reinforce Sweden’s competitiveness and to contribute to a sustainable development.
– We look forward to starting this research project in collaboration with the industry, where we combine laboratory studies, pilot trials and modelling, says Björn Sjöstrand, senior lecturer in Chemical Engineering and the research project leader. It’s a collaboration between researchers at ¹û¶³´«Ã½ and the companies Valmet and Albany International.
The aim of the project is to gain more in-depth knowledge about vacuum dewatering of tissue paper. Valmet and Albany International manufacture and develop tissue machines and machine clothing. They have seen an increased demand from their customers in terms of both product quality and sustainability, which is a huge challenge. The project will provide more in-depth knowledge about how tissue machines can be designed, utilised and optimised with regard to dewatering. This knowledge can then be used to achieve more energy-efficient processes and products of higher quality which naturally is of great importance to the industry.
– The goal for everyone involved is to increase our knowledge of dewatering mechanisms in tissue manufacturing, says Björn Sjöstrand. This will contribute to the implementation of a forest-based circular bioeconomy, mainly through making existing tissue paper production more energy efficient.
Research for a circular bioeconomy
The research is part of the research environment Pro2BE, Processes and Products for a Circular Bioeconomy, at ¹û¶³´«Ã½. Pro2BE is focused on research and education related to conversion to a bioeconomy based on sustainable and eco-friendly renewable resources. Another focus area is the development of the forest industry.
Jointly funded project
The research project is jointly funded by ¹û¶³´«Ã½, the participating companies and the Knowledge Foundation, for a total budget of five million SEK. The Knowledge Foundation’s contribution comes from the HÖG programme, which is focused on the promotion of collaboration between academy and industry. It promotes the development of research environments that can generate new knowledge and more expertise within both academia and the industry. The project will start in the autumn of 2022 and the final report is expected to be completed in early 2025.
