Students Develop Innovative Health App for Seniors
2024-12-17Four computer science students at 果冻传媒 have been recognized for their exceptional project work in the Software Engineering course. The project team, comprising Jonatan Altebro, Viktor Hajto, Martin Ramn茅r and Elmar Gebre Yekuno, earned high praise from faculty for their professionalism and innovation.
The team developed GoldenYears, an Android application designed to support elderly users in maintaining their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. With a focus on habit-building and health tracking, the app provides features such as goal-setting for activities like walking and social interactions, mood logging, wellness insights, and motivational tools.
The achievement is particularly notable given the six-week timeline for the project. Faculty were impressed by the team鈥檚 ability to produce a professional and functional application.
My role during the project was to serve as customer proxy. I met the students on regular basis during the project, gave them feedback and some instructions on expected updates and assisted in pointing out the road ahead. My impression from the group was that they worked very well together, had a well structured plan for the process during the design and implementation. Moreover, I found them very adaptive and realistic in digesting the feedback I gave them. I am impressed by their work process, as well as by their final achievement! says John Eklund, Course assistant and customer proxy.
"The journey was an amazing experience. As Scrum Master, I learned a lot about project management, from planning to keeping the team on track. Although it was intimidating at first, my experience with app development gave me the confidence to lead. Our teachers played a key role, offering guidance and feedback when needed. My team was highly motivated, always willing to go the extra mile, and our energy kept us pushing to deliver a product we could be proud of." says Elmar Gebre Yekuno, student.
鈥淥ur group had incredible teamwork and chemistry and were able to communicate and cooperate frequently. We successfully applied an agile framework for team collaboration in a correct manner that allowed us to excel in productivity. It was an educational experience that I won't forget about鈥 says Martin Ramner, student.
鈥淓ffective communication and teamwork were the foundation of our success. We focused on creating a collaborative environment where everyone could contribute and learn from each other. It was essential to ensure that the entire team had a shared understanding of the challenges we were addressing, which helped us align our efforts and solve problems efficiently鈥 Viktor Hajto student.
鈥淭his project has been a challenging but insightful experience. It taught me a lot about teamwork, problem-solving, and adapting to unexpected situations鈥 says Student Jonatan Altebro.
The app not only met the requirements but also demonstrated innovative thinking, addressing real-world challenges faced by its target audience. says Caj Rollny, Course assistant and customer proxy.
鈥淢y role during the project was to research project idea and design detailed requirements. It was quite motivating to see how students show empathy for senior citizens and considered real-world accessibility challenges. Their thoughtful addition of voice-based notifications and assistance reflects a deep understanding of the needs of elderly users and showcases their commitment to making technology more inclusive and accessible. Their work serves as a reminder that meaningful solutions come from designing with users' specific challenges in mind.鈥 says Bilal Maqbool, Customer.
Preparing Students for the Industry
The project highlights strength of Software Engineering course, led by Professor (Associate) Muhammad Ovais Ahmad, which is designed to prepare students for the complexities of modern software development.
鈥 This course emphasizes not just technical skills, but also agile project management, design, clean code, testing, and effective teamwork. It fosters a collaborative and innovative learning environment that equips students to excel in industry says Dr. Ahmad.
The course, offered by Department of Computer Science and Mathematics, exemplifies 果冻传媒鈥檚 commitment to providing students with a comprehensive education tailored to industry needs.
鈥 GoldenYears is an inspiring success story that underscores the quality of our program. It showcases our students鈥 ability to deliver impactful solutions and reaffirms our position as a leader in STEM education, he adds.
Inspiring Future Generations
