Week 43 coincides with both UNESCO’s Global MIL Week and SPARC’s Open Access Week. To highlight this, the University Library is organising three events. Two of them require registration, one by 17 October and one by 20 October at the latest.
First up is a film screening followed by a talk with the director, in the afternoon Tuesday 24 October. The film will be shown at Filmstaden in central ý and is organised together with Region Värmland. The film is the critically praised documentary “And the king said, what a fantastic machine”, which is about the history of the camera and images, and the way it has affected and continues to affect our behaviour. If you wish to attend the event, you must register by 17 October at the latest.
The film screening is part of UNESCO's Global MIL Week, a themed week on media and information literacy. The week is devoted to understanding the role of the media and spreading skills to critically evaluate content and make informed decision, which is the core of freedom of expression and information.
On Wednesday 25 October, we turn our focus to Open Access Week, which is initiated by the non-profit organisation SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition).
– Open access is an area where a lot is happening right now. If you want to keep up, this is a great opportunity to join in and prepare for the change that is already underway, says librarian Magnus Åberg.
The theme of this year's Open Access Week is “Community over commercialization” and the event at the University Library on Wednesday offers several seminars and a panel discussion.
– In short, open access and open science are about making the entire research cycle more open and transparent. The faculties here at the university have also been tasked by the vice-chancellor on this matter, says Magnus Åberg.
The third event of the week is also held at the University Library, on Thursday, and connects to the MIL Week.
– This event is part of our series Meet a Researcher here at the Library Learning Lab. This time we are inviting Jonas Hjalmar Blom, doctoral student at CTF and psychologist, who will be giving a lecture under the heading “The world's worst disinformation campaign?”, says librarian Mas Karin Gustafsson.
– He talks about how companies influence our perception of global warming and how to see through the psychological tricks. As always, Meet a Researcher is free and open to anyone interested, and you do not have to register in advance to attend.
