Valerie's research includes the topics of young gifted children, gifted education, inclusion, early literacy, intercultural practice, and strength-based assessment. Her research work aims to share lived experiences of diverse children,Ìýand to support teacher practice. She also researches internationalisation in higher education.

In 2021 Valerie led a successful application for 39.5 million SEK funding from the Swedish Research Council to establish a doctoral programme in gifted education. This is a partnership between ¹û¶³´«Ã½, Stockholm and Mälardalen universities.

Valerie is an experienced research supervisor of 15Ìýdoctoral students.ÌýHer research work primarily supports UBB, ¹û¶³´«Ã½'s Centre for Child and Childhood Studies. Valerie isÌýalso affiliated to CBU,ÌýCentre for Research on the Mental Health and Life Circumstances of Children and Youth.

Valerie's teaching primarily contributes to the preschool teacher education program at ¹û¶³´«Ã½, with particular focus on international perspectives on ECE, comparative studies, diversity and internationalisation@home opportunities. She also contributes to research method teaching and supervision of bachelor projects and masters theses.

Valerie has served on editorial boards ofÌýAPEX: The New Zealand Journal of Gifted Education,Ìý²¹²Ô»åÌý°­²¹¾±°ù²¹°ù²¹²Ô²µ²¹Ìý[a NZ inclusive education journal].ÌýValerie was a founding member of the ²µ¾±´Ú³Ù·¡¶Ù²Ô³úÌýearly childhood special interest group. She has served as peer reviewer for many early childhood journals. She is the coordinator for NNGE, the Nordic Network for Gifted Education, and co-convenorÌýnetwork 3, early childhood research within the Nordic Educational Research Association (NERA).Valerie has an honorary position asÌýAdjunct Professor at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia.

Valerie grew up and completed her education in New Zealand. In NZ, she taught in primary schools and early childhood, at The Open Polytechnic of NZ, and at Massey University. She also worked as Senior Advisor: Assessment at the Ministry of Education. Valerie worked at an Australian university for 7 years before moving toÌýSwedenÌýlate 2018.
