Reassessment and correction of awarded grade
A grading decision cannot be appealed to a higher authority. However, a decision can be reassessed or corrected by the university, which means that the examiner reviews the grading of your assignment.
If you as a student feel that an examination has not been assessed correctly, you can request to have the awarded grade reassessed or corrected, depending on the case. Matters of reassessment, correction and any decision to change a grade are made by the course examiner.
Reassessment of awarded grade
Requests to reassess an awarded grade must be made via a special form (see below) and submitted to the course administrator. In the form, you must clearly describe and argue why and in what way the grade is incorrect. Keep in mind that an awarded grade must be clearly incorrect in order to be reassessed. In other words, it should be easy to detect.
Here are some examples of reasons that are usually not sufficient to change an awarded grade since they lack a detailed justification as to why the grade is incorrect:
- "I have looked at another student鈥檚 exam and think that I should get the same number of points as him/her because we have given roughly the same answer."
- 鈥淚鈥檓 close to a pass or pass with credit. Can you see if you can find any additional points?鈥.
- 鈥淚 think that I should be awarded one more point for question x.鈥澨
- 鈥淐an you have another look at my exam?鈥
Should the university find that an awarded grade is clearly incorrect, the decision should be changed as long as it can be done quickly and easily and does not mean lowering the grade. The assessment is based on the submitted assignment/completed presentation or similar, and personal or external circumstances may not be taken into account in the assessment. A reassessment does听苍辞迟听mean that the examination is assessed by another teacher, that is, the examination will not be re-graded.
Correction
If the university has made an obvious typographical error, miscalculation or similar, the awarded grade may be corrected by the course examiner.
Form to request reassessment or correction
The form should be filled in and submitted to the administrator of the course in question.
After submitting your request for reassessment or correction
After submitting the form, your request for reassessment or correction will be processed and you will normally receive a decision within a few working weeks. Any decision to change a grade can only be made by the course examiner. If your application is rejected, there is no other authority to which you can appeal. Students鈥 right to reassessment and correction of awarded grades is regulated by the Higher Education Ordinance (Chap. 6, Sec. 23鈥24).
