Final project in Crowd Dynamics
The department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a bachelor/master project in crowd dynamics: Design and implementation of a scalable crowd visualization engine.
Background of the project
Crowd dynamics is a multidisciplinary research area with the goal to create life-like and realistic simulations of people moving through arbitrary environments. Over the last couple of years, the motivation for understanding the principles behind crowds has emerged in many areas, including gaming, virtual reality, architectural design and traffic modeling. Challenges in crowd dynamics consist of capturing the interaction between people, modeling how people choose their paths and developing realistic and scalable simulations.
Outline of project
The Applied Analysis group within mathematics has several researchers working on an open-source simulation framework for crowd dynamics.
Your goal is to develop and integrate a visualization component for this framework in Python (or C++), using either graphics libraries (OpenGL) or gaming engines (Unity). Apart from representing the environment and the people in motion, challenges lie in how to represent non-local measures of crowdedness like densities and congestions.
Requirements for students
- Required: programming experience in Python (or C++)
- Preferred: previous experience with visualization and programming
- Preferred: previous experience with mathematical models
