Visual Arts in practice I
30.0 ECTS creditsThe course provides an introduction to the area of visual arts and design. Through the application of methods and tools used in traditional artistic techniques in digital interfaces, students have the opportunity to think creatively about the artistic process. Students challenge arts conventions through observation, formulate questions, and reflect critically upon meaning-creating processes.
Module 1: Introduction to visual arts (7.5 ECTS cr)
This module introduces image-based thinking, creativity, and culture. A selection of aesthetic forms of expression in visual arts is introduced through practical exercises. The module includes an overview of key concepts and theories in art, design, and crafts.
Module 2: Visual arts techniques and methods (7.5 ECTS cr)
This module introduces traditional artistic techniques in encounters with digital interfaces. Basic crafts materials and methods in art and design are introduced and used. The function of sketching in exploratory arts and crafts is examined.
Module 3: Materials, people, and the environment (7.5 ECTS cr)
The module explores different theories, techniques, and forms of expression in relation to themes such as sustainability and ethical approaches to environmental design. Questions of how humans relate to the environment and the supply of materials in cultural perspectives are examined and discussed.
Module 4: The process and product of visual arts (7.5 ECTS cr)
This module involves individual creative projects. Work methods are process-oriented and connections between ideas, materials, and methods are explored in relation to the themes of the course. The module also includes study of the links between process and product in visual arts projects, from an international perspective.
