Education for sustainable development, ESD - school organisation and leadership
ESD deals with pupils’ ability to address complex societal challenges. It empowers them to make informed decisions in situations when there is a conflict of values related to economic, environmental and social issues.

The Swedish Institute for Educational Research funded a practice-based research study in a Swedish municipality during 2017-2022. The longitudinal research study ran parallel to a local practical school development project on ESD in the municipality. The study was interdisciplinary and based on theories and research methods derived from both ESD research and more general school development research. Data was collected on several levels of education, including school leaders, teachers, pupils and facilitators of the development project on ESD. The aim was to understand how practical implementation was shaped in relation to a whole school approach to ESD.
